Dr. Shannon McMahon is a professor at the College of Saint Mary in Nebraska. Her article in the Chronicle of Higher Education looks at the assumption that those of us who don't have kids resent the privilege of others having had them and regret what we didn't have. She interviewed 25 women professors who aren't mothers and found, among other things, that resentment and regret don't show up in their attitudes toward parenthood.
Based on the many interviews and small group discussions I've conducted with non-moms, I agree with her. We simply come at life from a different perspective and play important roles in the fabric of our society. I don't understand what purpose is served by suggesting otherwise.
